Fall 2009 Adopt-a-Road

While driving down Lahser Road between 10 and 11 Mile, one will see the lovely sisters of Delta Phi Epsilon cleaning the roadsides once a semester.  This is an act of community service to improve the community and to support the Adopt-a-Road foundation. This Fall 2009 semester there were 16 members that participated. The strangest items found ranged from broken bottles to used lottery tickets. This event not only helped improve the area, it was an experience for the sisters to share.

Alpha Psi Alumna Featured in eNewsletter

One of our chapter’s alumna, Melissa Barthel, has been featured in the Delta Phi Epsilon eNewsletter that is set to all members of our sorority across North America. We’ve always appreciated Melissa’s involvement in our chapter and it’s great to see her recognized internationally. Melissa was our chapter’s advisor, and even though later became the Chapter Operation Specialist for our region she was always only a phone call or e-mail away when we had questions or needed guidance.

Here is what was written about her:

208
Melissa Barthel (Alpha Psi) is a 2001 graduate of Lawrence Technological [University]. While an undergraduate, Melissa was an active member of her chapter, which was comprised of just a handful of women at the time. With Melissa’s hard work, as well as that of her fellow sisters, they built a strong foundation and continued to offer support after graduation in order to help the Alpha Psi Chapter be the thriving group of women it is today. It is with this passion for the success of our collegiate chapters that Melissa has continued to be one of our most valuable volunteers.

Melissa has served the organization in many capacities since her graduation, but has certainly left her mark on our chapter services. Most recently she has provided honest guidance and one-on-one support to chapters to help them provide successful and meaningful experiences for their own collegiate chapters – ensuring long term prosperity.

Melissa truly understands the “sisterhood for a lifetime” commitment she made to the organization and reminds everyone she comes in contact with what it means to be a sister of Delta Phi Epsilon. Thank you, Melissa!

In addition to being such an influential part of Delta Phi Epsilon Melissa is also married and has a young son. We are so proud that this amazing sister came from our chapter! Thank you, Melissa, for all the hard work you’ve done for our chapter and for the sorority as a whole over the years!

The First Week of Recruitment 09

We just finished up our first week of Recruitment here at LTU, and are well into the second week. So far we’ve had a blast! So many awesome girls came out, and we, as actives, have had the chance to spend time with sisters who we haven’t seen much lately due to summer. It’s so nice seeing the atrium full of people for once! Greek Rush is one of my personal favorite times of the year because there’s always someone around to talk to or hang out with.

So far we’ve had about 12 women attend our events and we’ve had a lot of fun with each and every one of them. Whether it’s just spending time at the booth or at one of our evening events, we’ve enjoyed getting to know everyone. On Friday we also played an impromptu volleyball game, which was a lot of fun! So far everyone seems to be having a good time, and even a little disappointed that rush will all be over at the end of this week.

To all the women at LTU: if you havent come out to the booth for an event yet, its not too late! Come visit us in the atrium!

Go DPhiE!

Snow Cones and Great Tunes

Wednesday was the Welcome Back Concert at LTU. All of the student organizations had the opportunity to have a booth at the concert to serve things and we chose to serve snow cones. With the help of Rich from the Sig Eps we served blue and red snow to cones to LTU student and people visiting from the community to see the awesome bands that preformed. To start off the night Dave Tamkin preformed great acoustic rock covers and encouraged everyone to sing along get in an awesome mood. Next, Blue Scholars gave us music to dance to and finally Forever the Sickest Kids performed and the crowd went crazy with excitement. The whole evening was a ton of fun and SPAM and the Welcome Back Week committee did a great job.

Discovery Days Fair

Discovery Days are here and Monday was the student organization fair which gave us the chance to speak with new students that may be interested in joining our sorority. All of the organizations on campus from sororities and fraternities to honors societies to sports group were represented at the fair. We passed out our recruitment schedule and other information and talked to the women we met about what being in a sorority is like and how much fun recruitment is. We hope that all the women we met join us for recruitment!

Car Wash in the Rain

On Sunday the chapter held a car wash on campus during freshmen move in. The weather was not behaving exactly as we would have liked, but we still washed some cars and had a lot of fun doing it! Here are some photos from the day. Thanks to everyone who let us wash their car and donated!

Hot Dogs, and Hot Days

This past Saturday sisters young and old (and even three little legacies) met for a family picnic on LTU’s campus.

The barbecue was coordinated by one of our actives. As deephers showed up, bringing their husbands and children the actives were excited to mingle and hear stories of years past, everything from old nicknames, to a snowy Chicago trip. Hot dogs and hamburgers were thrown on the grill and the children entertained themselves with soccer and baseball. Luckily all of the children were around the same age, and got along great. One little one even decided to decorated the patio behind north housing with sticky notes and drawings. As the night went on we chatted about future events, and our excitement for recruitment. Sharing our goals with the alum we listened as they gave us valuable advice. Alpha Psi really loves our alum. Without them we would not be what we are today!! We hope to make them proud, and keep making them proud year after year.

Summer ‘09 Retreat

Summertime. School’s out! That means it’s time for summer jobs, being outside and sister bonding time!

Alpha Psi Girls at Retreat

The LTU Deephers packed the cars and took off for Rose Lake in Northern Michigan to our sister Ellen’s cabin. Once there, we pitched tents and built a fire. Then the rest of the chapter roasted marshmallows and hung out while the Leadership Team had their first official meeting in the cabin. After that, it was time to hang out and relax! After all, it’s SUMMER!

Saturday morning after breakfast, the Leadership Team dazzled the chapter with their theatrical skills and performed a skit designed to clarify our Risk Management policy. Then, we slathered on our sunscreen, packed the coolers and headed to the beach! The VPMD team initiated a softball game in which we learned more about our PEARL program, and we definitely learned a lot—like which sisters can hit a homer and which ones would rather cheer from the sidelines! Everyone learned the basics of softball and we worked together to show off our teamwork skills. Next, we participated in some fun sisterhood activities before we broke off into groups to swim, play volleyball, or just veg out in the sun!

The return to Ellen’s cabin included dinner and another bonfire. We joked around, played cards, danced and just hung out. We had a blast and no sister’s head hit the pillow without a smile on her face!

Sadly, even the best weekends must come to an end. We packed up the cars again and left Rose Lake, but not without some fantastic memories! We are all looking forward to the school year and, hopefully, another awesome retreat next summer!
